Born in Sweden, he studied in Europe before coming to New Orleans in 1883. Four years later he launched a periodical called Arts and Letters which lasted only a short time in spite of his enlistment of the gifted writers of the area.
He became a leading designer of New Orleans carnival pageantry which augmented his income so that he could live comfortably and travel to Europe frequently.
He joined with others in formation of the Southern Art Union, offering the first art training available to local students. He painted a variety of subjects, but is best known for his fine marine paintings.
